Welcome!
I’m Sarahbeth.
Therapy isn’t just about fixing what’s broken—it’s about making space for who you really are. If you’re here, you’re probably feeling stuck in some way—in your relationship, in old patterns, in cycles you can’t seem to break. Maybe you’re navigating a childhood that still echoes in your adult life, or a relationship that feels more complicated than you expected. Whatever brought you here, you don’t have to untangle it alone.

I work with couples and individuals who want something different—more connection, more clarity, more freedom from old wounds. My specialties include:

-
Couples therapy (because it’s not actually about the thermostat setting—it’s about feeling heard and respected)
-
Trauma recovery (especially for those with complicated childhoods, religious trauma, or family dynamics shaped by personality disorders like BPD or narcissism)
-
Perinatal mental health (infertility, birth trauma, postpartum anxiety/depression, and that identity shift that comes with parenthood)
If any of this resonates, I’d love to meet you.

Couples Therapy: Let’s Get You Unstuck

I love working with couples—of all stages, backgrounds, and relationship structures. Whether you’re feeling distant, stuck in the same fight, or just not quite sure how to get your partner to really hear you, therapy can help.

I have advanced training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy (Level 2), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Prepare/Enrich. The Gottmans’ research (based on over 40 years of studying relationships) pinpoints exactly which patterns bring couples closer—and which ones push them apart. EFT helps untangle those moments where you and your partner keep missing each other, breaking the old cycles so you can actually feel heard and understood. If things keep escalating in ways you don’t want, there is hope.

💡 What I help couples with:
✔ Getting to the root of conflict (it’s never just about the dishes)
✔ Learning how to fight better (because conflict isn’t the problem—disconnection is)
✔ Rebuilding trust & intimacy
✔ Supporting unique relationships (ENM, polyamory, kink—you'll never have to defend your structure to me)
✔ Navigating big transitions—moving in together, preparing for marriage, adjusting to life with a baby

Speaking of babies—did you know 67% of couples experience a decline in relationship satisfaction for up to three years after their first child? I’m certified in the Gottman Bringing Baby Home program to help you navigate parenthood without losing each other in the process.

Trauma-Informed Individual Therapy

Your past doesn’t have to write the script for your future. I work with adults untangling the impact of complicated childhoods, religious trauma, and relationships shaped by narcissism or emotional neglect. Many of my clients grew up in high-control environments where their needs weren’t considered, or they had to shrink themselves to keep the peace. Sound familiar?

I’m trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a powerful approach for trauma recovery, as well as EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy) to help you connect more deeply with your emotions instead of feeling like they’re running the show.

💡 Areas I specialize in:
✔ Unpacking childhood wounds & family dynamics
✔ Healing from religious trauma & high-control environments
✔ Breaking out of toxic relationship patterns
✔ Processing trauma (big or small) so it no longer holds power over you

For those navigating pregnancy, postpartum, infertility, or infant loss, I also have advanced training in Perinatal Mental Health Psychotherapy. If your experience of parenthood (or the path to it) isn’t what you expected, you don’t have to navigate that alone.

My Path to Therapy

I didn’t start my career as a therapist. For 20 years, I was a college English instructor—which means I spent a lot of time helping people make sense of their stories. When the pandemic hit, I watched my students struggle with anxiety, trauma, and disconnection in ways that went far beyond academics. I realized that the most important work wasn’t teaching writing—it was helping people understand themselves and their relationships. That’s what led me back to school for a graduate degree in Clinical Mental Health at the College of William & Mary.

I believe therapy is about more than just coping—it’s about healing, growing, and making space for the life you actually want.

Let’s Connect

I’m based in Richmond, VA, offering in-person therapy in Henrico (near Short Pump) and telehealth across Virginia. Therapy is a deeply personal choice, and finding the right fit matters. If you’re curious about working together, schedule a free 15-minute consultation—I’d love to hear what’s on your mind and see if we’re a good match.
